For those of you who actually read this to keep up with the goings-on of the garner clan, I must apologize for my lack of blogging. I'm not exactly sure why I am so far behind, but I am. I realized I hardly kept you up to speed this summer and now we're rapidly coming up on Christmas. I'll try to give a brief overview of summer in this edition and see what i can do to catch you up!
We truly had a great summer! We took our annual trip to that most wonderful place known as Edisto Beach. This year, we rented a house with my parents and brother & sister-in-law. It was great to be together in one place this year (in the past, we've been in 2 smaller places). I think the best part to the girls, aside from having Nan, Pop-Pop, John-John & Aunt Nell at their beck & call, was the apple green golf cart that came with the house! They loved being able to go everywhere on the golf cart - it was quite a treat! We thought the house was so great that we've already booked it for 2008.
We then had our annual 4th at the Farm Party with our Sunday School class. This was the 7th year of this awesome party. We owe many thanks to Lisa's parents for hosting us each year. The kids love it. The parents love that the kids are getting older and enjoy playing and swimming and don't have to be held all of the time! We figure it won't be too many more years when our kids will be old enough for us to stay until dark and do fireworks. I know the dad's are looking forward to those days!
The next week the girls and I went to Fripp with the Whatley's. We did that last year and had such a great time that we were invited back! I think we have stumbled upon another summer tradition! The kids had a ball. Mason learned that it's fun to have a Playstation. She was excited that she beat Thomas several times while playing MLB!
At the end of July, both girls went to camp. Mason went to Microscope Camp at Furman, which is a nature/science camp. She loved it! It met every day from 9-4 for a week. On the last day, she asked if she could do the 2-week version next summer. I would say that it was a success! If I can get around to it, I might try to scan in some pictures and write more about that camp. It was an awesome experience. While Mason was digging in the dirt, Kate was twirling around like a princess. She went to a Princess Dance Camp and LOVED it! Because of that week, she is now taking dance! I've got some pictures that I'll try to download and put on here. It was a great week for both girls.
We were supposed to go to Pennsylvania for a week like we have the past few summers, but I broke my leg the Wednesday before we were supposed to leave. Maybe we'll be able to make that happen next summer because we always have a great time!
The girls were signed up for Vacation Bible School, but ended up going to Savannah to spend a week with PaPaw & Grandma. It was a great help to me since I was still on crutches. I think I owe Linda & Tim big for that one! By the time they got home, the summer was almost over and it was time to head back to school! However, I think we can chalk Summer 2007 as a great one!
Right before school started, Tedd and I were lucky enough to go on a cruise with some IKON people. I'll work on blogging about that later - it was awesome!
Sorry for the cliffs notes version, but it's all I've got right now :-)

Tedd's Race Report
IRONTEDD’s big adventure
As many of you know this crazy idea started years ago. I have told folks there was a little Ironman growing inside of me, right behind my pancreas and he kept getting bigger and bigger. Well, this year he became full sized. This is the story of how one almost 40 year old guy became an IRONMAN.
First and foremost, thank you to my unbelievable wife and family who for my 39th birthday gave me a year of “relatively guilt free training.” It sounded like permission to me so off I went. Thanks to Rusty and Neil for the rides and runs and keeping me company along the way. Thanks to Ron for putting up with me on the long rides. I really enjoyed them. Thanks to my folks for coming out and supporting me and helping Anne. Thanks to all the babysitters for the Tuesday nights so I could ride. Thanks to Mason and Kate for going along for the ride. You may not know what a great day this was for me, but sharing it with you was something I will never forget. Thanks to Anne for the best gift of all, I couldn’t have done this without you.
PRERACE
Thursday
Painted the Mdot on the car, painted “Honk if you do 140.6” on the car, buckled the girls into their seats and set off for Louisville. How was I feeling? Scary calm. Sure I was excited about what was coming up, but it was days away and didn’t even feel like much more than another long Saturday training ride. That would change.
Friday
Met Ron for the Gatorade swim down by the original swim. Now it is starting to feel more exciting. It is all there, just like in Hawaii..the big gatorade bottle, the excitement in the air, the lean and tan bodies all looking fitter and in better shape than me. Ron needed a 40 min swim and I needed to just swim some so we lined up. Swim out to the first buoy, turn right, go up 3 buoys, swim back, those were our instructions for the half mile warm up swim. We watch the first group hop in and swim to the buoy….where are they going? All but one are being rapidly swept down the river toward the bridge, one is holding even but not progressing….Out go the kayakers and the rescue boats to get that group. New plan…stay close to shore. In we go and up stream we fly. The water is great. Very much like SC ocean water, 85 degrees and brownish. I can see my hand with my arm fully extended..Not nearly as gross as I expected. Swim up river is slow, but I am making progress. I hit the turn and fly back to the start. I pick my ferry line 20-30 yards up from the finish to ferry across and hit the stairs just right, NOPE not even close, I miss the stairs by 10 yards and have to swim upstream to get out. Not hard, just missed. 30 minute swim and it felt good. Back to the hotel for a quick shower and to get the family to head to the am athletes briefing, register and do some shopping….
Saturday
Ron and I meet up with Carole, the nurse from New York for a quick easy ride on River Road to get out the nerves and do a last bike check. We have to have the bikes turned in by 5pm today with transition bags. Final check….Ride is windy but flat and we have a great time. Ron and I stopped to watch a cricket match on the way back. That game still cracks me up as I know nothing about it. Everything checks out on the bike so it is back to the room to do the final pack and just hang and rest a bit. Girlies are out with my folks at the KY Derby museum. They had a horse, Kate was happy.
Packing the bags was another one of those “NO TURNING BACK” moments. The anticipation was building. Seemed simple enough…put all you need for the bike in one bag and all you need for the run in another…Why did I have to pack each bag 5 times? How did I still forget to put my nutrition in? Guess I got what was needed though….Take the bikes and the bags to transition and am met by my transition host, Dianne. She walks me to where my bike goes, helps me hang my bags and then walks me through transition as if I was coming through on race day. That was really cool. Starting to really feel it now. Getting a little apprehensive. Anne and the girls call it grumpy, but I knew it was nerves.
Off for Pizza and then the girls head to Grammas and Papaws hotel room for the night. I sleep horrible. I go to bed about 9:30 and toss and turn all night. To be expected I suppose. I wake up at 4:15 have a pop tart and some juice to start the day like I trained them. Anne and I meet Dad at 5:15 and we go pick up Ron.
THE RACE
Dad and Anne drop us off at transition so Ron and I can get body marked and our bikes ready. The lady who body marks me actually asks me if I am a pro. God bless her. She has no idea how good that made me feel.
Nutrition in the bento box on the bike, air in the tires, a couple of quick snapshots and we off we go to the start. The modified start is ¾ of a mile up the road and will be a time trial start instead of the typical Ironman mass start. Lots of negatives being heard about this type of start. Matters not to me, I still have to swim the entire distance. We talked about missing the traditional mass start and how that is something we feared and wanted to conquer, but in the end this was just as good. We get in line and wait for the start. Ron and I are so far around the corner we can’t see the water. We sit and wait for about 30 minutes for our start. Boom, there go the pros…I am so nervous, my stomach is a wreck. THIS THING IS ON!
SWIM – 1:08:42 1:48/100 average
22 minutes after 7 - I hit the water. Doesn’t feel like much current, but I focus on long full strokes. Reach and follow through. Sighting is easy as the line of trees is right next to us. Lots of people in the water, but it doesn’t feel crowded. I bump and get bumped a bit, but nothing major. Starting to get in the groove and the tummy is relaxing. Focus on the moment and staying relaxed with efficient strokes. I check my watch at the top of the turn (about ¾ of a mile) and see 30 minutes, seems slow, but I know I am going upstream and the current will help me out in a sec. I make the turn, sight on the buildings downtown and focus on long strokes. 15 minutes later, I am back where we started..Oh yea, gotta love the current. Only concerns on the swim were about losing my chip when I did the breast stroke to sight and peeing, but Anne says I can’t mention that in the race report…OUT OF THE WATER IN 1:08. 388th place out of 2175

T1 – 0:05:53
This is a long transition. Out of the water, up the ramp, across the bridge, down the stairs, get you bag and into the tent. This was a pretty easy transition for me. Lots of help in the tent, actually had a volunteer helping pull down my jersey while I was putting on my shoes. Thinking to myself, long day, don’t need to rush this, slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Out of the tent and over to get the bike.
Anne and Dad are spotted even with my bike rack row and cheering me on. You really have no idea how awesome that is until you experience it. YES, I forget to go get sunscreen….I have the “tan” to prove it…then we have a long hike with a bike to the mounting area and then finally we are off.
BIKE – 6:28:02 – 17.32mph average
The bike was great for the first 60 miles. Remembering what everything you read said, go easy for the 1st 30 miles. Easy on this course as the first 15 are flat and somewhat shady. I concentrate on easy spinning and beginning my nutrition. Gatorade every 15 minutes, Gu on the 30 minutes and PB&J on the 60 minutes. Tick tock like clock work. I take a new cold Gatorade at every aid station. Man that makes a world of difference. Cold is good. The spur of the course is the toughest challenge. Long screaming downhill, long watershed type climb up..Turn around and do it again backwards…Still in the 1st 30 miles so I am focused on spinning my small chain ring and not blowing up my legs. Seems to be working. Onto the LaGrange loop. Wow, lots of short hills, but this is like riding in Greenville. No big deal. We are getting ready to turn into LaGrange when we get passed by the pros. Guy behind me says..”wow, they are like 45 MILES ahead of us.” Not good for the head. Luckily we head into LaGrange and it is jammed with folks. What a boost of energy..There they are…I see Anne cheering like crazy with her sign. Feeling great through town….Other side of town, head wind and more hills. Still feeling good and just aero down and go. Nutrition is still right on track and I am feeling good, but dang this is a long loop. Left turn a
nd the wind is behind us and I feel 100% better. Soon enough, the turn for the second loop starts again. Mentally, this is tough. I know what is waiting for me, where the hills are and how windy it is. But I also know I am 45 miles from the finish and the last 15 are flat with a tail wind AND I get to see the family again. Second loop was uneventful except for the nutrition. I just couldn’t eat another dang sandwich. So just Gu and Gatorade. In LaGrange I toss the girls a water bottle and they get it. Man that is a good feeling to see folks cheering for you. I see my family and the Jerina’s. By the end of the second loop, before the flat part, my back/shoulders are cramping and I am struggling to stay on the aero bars. I ride the last bit in, spinning and sitting upright. For the most part the ride was perfect. I was truly in the moment almost the entire way and not worried about much of anything. The course was beautiful and it was not nearly as hot as I anticipated. Back into town…..2 down, 1 to go.
T2 – 14:45
I was shocked to be in there almost 15 minutes, but I was having trouble focusing on even small tasks and the order in which to do them. In shorter races it was much easier, shoes on, hat on, go…I had a full change of clothes here. I guess I got a little lost. I had a volunteer put biofreeze all over my back to help loosen me up. BEST DECISION of the day. Finally out of the tent and over to sunscreen. Didn’t forget again. Then out to the street for the weird mile one loop.
RUN – 6:02:40 – 13:50/mile
My first mile was at 9:50 on my watch, dang, felt like the mile on the track..good sign, felt easy and I knew if I could keep 11 minute miles I was golden. Weird feeling in my right shoe. Stop, take off the shoe now so you don’t get blisters. Nothing in the shoe, nothing in the sock. Oh well, off I go again. I am walking the aid stations and running between them…Still on pace or pretty dang close. Mile 6, Ron catches me. He looks strong and is doing really awesome. I am not feeling great, a little sloshy in the tummy. If the tummy/digestion is a problem, slow down and walk, let blood go to the tummy and it will get better. I walk mile 7 – 8. I am slowing down. My feet are starting to hurt a lot but t
he tummy is feeling better. I am run walking now, the pace has slowed. My feet are killing me..they are sliding in my shoes left to right and hot spots are appearing. Not good. I check my times now and can still hit 13 hours if I can run some..I pick up the pace a bit and make it to the turn around. It is cruel. Right up beside the finish shoot then turn right away from it for the next loop…so close you could see the finish line..Mile 15 I can’t run any more. I make the decision to walk it in as fast as I can…the feet hurt 50 times more when I run than when I walk. I have made a great effort, but 13 hours will elude me today. I will run the last mile however. No matter how hard it is…
It is getting darker and darker and the miles seem to get farther and farther apart. Sign on the side of the road says if you are going through hell right now…..Keep GOING…how appropriate. The fans are great, the folks at the aid stations are great. Mile 19 fans on the side of the road comment on my “halo” the glow ring they gave us. I say at this point, I’ll take any help I can get. These 3 folks all stand up and start screaming…”GO 702, YOU CAN DO THIS….ALMOST THERE…BE THE IRONMAN…GO GO GO….” I wave and trot on down the road…30 second pass and I hear them again…”702 GO …..YOU GOT IT…DON’T GIVE UP” I raise my arms, Rocky style and they Cheer again. Don’t know who you guys were, but thank you. I needed that right then more than you will ever know….Miles 22, Mile 23, Mile 24…Mile 25…
THE FINISH – 14:00:02
I am running the last mile no matter what. It hurts, I am late, but I am going to run this thing in. Turn the corner left, one block then right..and WHAM…lights, 8000 fans, the noise, the energy, pain is gone, feeling awesome, the finish line is just up the hill. I am going to be an IRONMAN in 45 seconds….don’t get to close to the guy in front of you…let him get his picture clean..no one behind you….Go for the line…200 yards before the line I see Dad and Anne on the fence cheering. I AM GOING TO BE AN IRONMAN…..Cross the line and flex like the HULK. OH YEAH……I AM AN IRONMAN.
Funny thing, my reason for doing this, the driving force the ONE reason was to hear the Mike Reilly (the ironman announcer) say, “Tedd Garner, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN”….I never heard it. Folks who watched it say they heard it, but I never did. And it doesn’t matter. IRONMAN before I am 40. What a great thing.

Tedd is an Ironman!
I will post more later, but I wanted to let you all know that Tedd completed his first (and last, he says!) Ironman on Sunday. It was the inaugural Ironman Louisville and it was awesome. He rocked on the 2.4 mile swim, coming out of the water in 388th place out of 2100 athletes. His 112 mile bike was great as well, but he suffered a little on the marathon. His shoes were rubbing blisters on the bottoms of his feet, so he was in quite a bit of pain. However, he managed to finish with a huge smile on his face and we all heard Mike Reilly announce, "Tedd Garner...You Are An Ironman!" Tedd crossed the finish line in 14:00:02. I'll post Tedd's race report later, along with some pictures!

An Interesting Middle of the Night
Last night began normal enough. We had 2 REALLY tired girls, who went to bed like the sweethearts they CAN be. My boot insert had gotten incredibly stinky so I asked Tedd to wash it last night. I figured if I slept on the couch, I wouldn't have to try to get upstairs without my walking boot. I went to sleep sometime.
At about 2:45 Tedd woke me up saying "I don't want to startle you, but I've just called the police." Of course, my heart starts racing. Apparently there was a guy in our driveway who had wrecked his Harley. We sat quietly in the den because we didn't want to make him aware that we were up and had called the cops. Seems that maybe he had a bit too much to drink and had some trouble with the curve in the road. He took out the neighbors mailbox, came through their yard, crossed our driveway and looped back around into our driveway and crashed. Tedd heard the trademark Harley sound, then the horn honked and heard a crash. He got up and looked out of the bedroom window to see this guy trying to pick up his bike. I'm sorry I missed the show because it was a tad bit entertaining, albeit sad. His first attempt at picking up his bike resulted in it falling back down and him doing a double back roll down our driveway. The second attempt found him falling backwards - no roll this time. The third attempt found him falling on his face and laying there. At this point, Tedd called 911.
Tedd calling 911, coming downstairs to fill me in and the EMS guys getting here, the dude left. After asking some questions, they took off looking for him. Then 3 sherriff's office cars show up and start looking around and taking notes. A fire truck then comes. It was quite a sight looking out the front window. Then, for a reason I haven't figured out yet, they called in the Highway Patrol. The Sherriff's department left when HP got here. Tedd talked to them for a while and then he went next door to talk to the neighbor who lost their mailbox and now has some nice divots in his grass (which he takes really good care of). The Highway Patrol guy asked Tedd some questions and then said he'd call a wrecker to come take the Harley. My thinking was that a Harley is an awfully expensive toy to abandon in someone's driveway. At 5:30 this morning, the wrecker came to take it away and the HP guy left. I went back to sleep before the wrecker got here, but Tedd didn't get back to sleep until after that. Needless to say, we were both pretty beat today. Luckily the girls slept through all of the excitement.
So, now my curiosity is getting the best of me. I want to know if they found the guy and whether or not he was alright. I imagine he didn't feel very good when he got up this morning. I'm also imagine he might be in a bit of trouble - not only was he driving under the influence, but he also damaged personal property and fled the scene. I don't know if we'll ever know how this story ends, but I sure would like to!

Small Body...Big Mind
Mason and Kate spent the night with Nan & Pop-Pop Friday night to help me out with this broken leg predicament. Mom asked Mason if she was looking forward to school starting and being a first grader. Mason responded "I am going to be small to be in the first grade, but that doesn't matter. My body may be small, but I have a big mind."
How can you argue with that!?
How can you argue with that!?

Back in the Boot
I am in total shock tonight as I sit here back in my boot. I'm really not as clumsy as it is seems. I think I've just had a huge amount of bad luck when it comes to my leg. Today, I broke my leg again...in the exact same place as I broke it 5 months ago. Once again, I was carrying Kate - that might be the last time! We were leaving Haywood Mall at lunchtime. We were heading back to the car because my wallet had fallen out of my purse. Since we were kind of in a hurry, I picked Kate up so we could make this a quick trip back to the car. Right after I stepped out the door, I slipped on someone's spilled soda and fell. I dropped poor Kate, landing on her back and hitting her head. She screamed , but seems to be okay. Maybe she'll learn that I don't need to carry her anymore - I keep trying to tell her that! Anyway, I knew immediately that I had seriously hurt my leg again.
On a side note, I was shocked at how few people stopped to see if we were okay. I'm on the ground with a screaming Kate in my lap and people just walked past us. One nice lady offered me her cell phone in case I needed to call someone. Then, my hero for the day, Cathleen Craig, was walking into the mall. She came over and asked what she could do to help. She was able to bring the car up close by and helped me get Kate in the car. I've always loved Cathleen, but she went up a few more notches in my book today! I thought I was doing okay, but as I started to drive, I was getting dizzy and my vision was blurry. I pulled into a parking place and kept trying to get Tedd on the phone (he had just started a conference call at work). I was finally able to get through and Tedd came to the mall parking lot to help me home. The doctors office was closed for lunch so we had to wait for a little while.
I was finally able to get into the orthopedist office for an x-ray and it turns out that I broke the exact same spot on my fibula. I am now back in my boot for another 6-8 weeks. Needless to say, I'm a bit frustrated with this new scenario. But at least I've had practice and know how to get around with this lovely accessory!

Our 1st SAIL experience
summer in Greenville = SAIL
For those of you who aren't familiar with SAIL (Swim Association Invitational League), it is swim team. Mason has asked for the past 2 summers if she was old enough to "do swim team." 2007 was finally the year and she has loved it! She has already figured out that a huge part of SAIL is social. She is all about taking her cooler with a peanut butter sandwich, random snacks, and of course Gatorade (because that's what you drink when you're doing a sport!). On any given Thursday night, you will find Mason sitting in her little folding chair in the middle of the Brookfield swim team - she's in heaven! Most weeks she would swim short free (25 yards, freestyle). She has also added backstroke to her repertoire. Unfortunately, the 1st week she was scheduled to swim back, the meet was called due to a terrible storm. At the last meet, she was able to swim back, but got "dis-cancelled" (or DQ'd in most people's speak!) because she rolled over to check out where the wall was. To her credit, Coach Plyler hadn't told her that she couldn't roll over! It didn't affect her mood at all - she was so excited about swimming back that she didn't care about being dis-cancelled! We missed the final meet last week because we were at the beach. We're now looking forward to divisionals in a couple of weeks!
As much as Mason has enjoyed SAIL, the whole family has benefited from the experience because we've gotten to know some of our neighbors better. It's been a lot of fun for all of us and we can't wait until next year!

Florida 70.3 Ironman
1.2 mile swim...56 mile bike...13.1 mile run
Those early morning, lunchtime and evening swims, rides and runs have paid off. Tedd completed the Florida 70.3 Ironman on May 20 at Disneyworld. It was also fun getaway weekend for the 2 of us. We left Thursday around lunchtime and drove to Savannah to drop the girls off at Pa-Paw and Grandma's house for the long weekend. We spent the night and then started our trek to Orlando Friday morning. We arrived at our hotel around 3:30 and then went to check in at the race. It was great to park the van at the hotel and take Disney transportation everywhere. To get to the race venue we had to take a bus to the Magic Kingdom and then a boat to Fort Wilderness. About the time we got on the boat, Tedd had realized that it would have been fun to bring the girls with us. I had a hard time not saying "I told you so!"
I had tried to convince Tedd that we should take the girls with us. He was concerned about his focus on the race and I couldn't really argue with that point, although I tried! I even had convinced Aunt Nell to fly down from PA and help me with the girls. My thinking was that we could have some pool time on Friday and then the 4 girls could hit Magic Kingdom on Saturday while Tedd did his pre-race stuff. My ideas were shot down, but Tedd came to his senses once we were there. Only it was too late! We have decided that we might take them to Disney next year for their birthdays - YIPPEE - I can't wait!
Anyway, we spent Saturday relaxing by the pool, wandering around Downtown Disney and having lunch at the Rainforest Cafe, which was way cool (definitely a place to take the girls!). Once we got back from Downtown Disney, Tedd took his bike and checked it in to the transition area while I sat by the pool, read my book and drank a couple of beers. We had a lowkey evening and ate dinner at the foodcourt area of our hotel. I spent some time doing some work for the Children's Museum while Tedd organized and reorganized his transition bag. He went to bed pretty early since he had to leave the hotel by 5:00 to catch the bus to For
t Wilderness. We had numerous discussions on whether I should go with him at 5:00 or sleep in and catch the transportation once it started. I went with the latter - not no one's surprise, I'm sure. I took the bus to boat route and arrived at Camp Wilderness about 15 minutes prior to seeing Tedd finish up the bike portion of the race and head into the transition area. I found a great place to hang out while he ran 3 LONG laps before finishing the race. He said beforehand that he would be ecstatic if he could break 6 hours. His official time was 5:57:56 - so he succeeded!
According to Tedd, he had a great swim, a smoking fast ride and a horrible run! Unfortunately, since the run was last, he spent more time bummed about that. I kept trying to tell him that he should focus on the fact that he broke 6 hours. I think he tried to do that! I found him at the finishline, looked for a cold coke & water and then started our trek back to the van. That turned out to be a bit of a pain in my a#$. Tedd had to ride his bike to somewhere to catch a bus that would take the athletes back to the parking lots. Family members had to get on another bus, which ended up taking up all the way around the Wilderness Campground...stopping at EVERY stop. We ended up at another bus stop, got off that bus and then got onto another bus, which took us to the parking lot. This process took about an hour. Poor Tedd sat in the parking lot wondering where in the world I ended up! We took the van back to the hotel. Tedd showered, we packed up our stuff, had a late lunch and then started our trip back to Savannah.
The girls had an awesome time in Savannah. It was hard not telling them where we had been since they want to go there so bad! We managed to get through our stories without saying where exactly we had been. They knew we went to Florida for daddy's race. I'll maybe blog about their weekend in Savannah!
Sorry this is so long...hope it's not too boring, but that's what we've been up to lately!

A Lovely Boot
That is my latest fashion accessory. Note that it is a boot...not a pair of boots. Yep, I'm in one of those lovely walking boots because I broke my leg about a month ago. Apparently being mom to Mason and Kate was a little boring and I needed to spice things up a little bit. So, how did this happen, you might ask...
We were at Mom & Dad's house for a quick visit with Uncle Sparky who was here for 1 night from Phoenix (wow...to be young!). Kate was having so much fun that she didn't want to go home. I picked her up and we were heading to the car. I was wearing my Dansko's and rolled my ankle, as many people tend to do in those marvelous shoes! Next thing I knew I was on the cold ground in an immense amount of pain. I believe Kate it the real culprit here...not really...I can't blame it on her! I do think, however, that because I was holding an extra 40 pounds, I couldn't catch myself like I normally do and therefore, went down. I'm not sure how I managed to do it, but I was able to set Kate down fairly gently on her bottom. I guess you could say "I saved the child and broke my leg!" She and Mason were obviously distraught to see Mommy hurt and not able to get off the ground. I was down for quite some time because I thought I was going to hurl or pass out. Tedd and Dad were able to unstick me from the frozen earth and help me to the car. I'm not sure when I've been in that much pain - it sucked! The ride home was the longest 15 minutes of my life - I really wasn't sure I was going to make it without puking! Somehow I did and was able to get on the couch - from which I didn't move for a day and a half.
I didn't really want to go to the ER on a Saturday. Besides, I figure I had sprained it pretty bad - I never imagined it was broken. By Sunday afternoon I knew I needed to visit the doctor. Turns out, once again, I'm not the best diagnostician! After an x-ray, it was determined that I did indeed break my leg - my fibula to be exact. I was immediately sent to the orthopedist who gave me this lovely new accessory! I am to wear this thing for a total of 6-8 weeks - I'm hoping for 6 - but at least I'm halfway through it! For the first few weeks I was on crutches which hindered my life a little bit. I've been told that I needed to slow down a little bit, but this is a tad extreme! Oh well! Thank goodness for great family and friends who have been kind enough to bring us wonderful meals and help out with the girls! I don't know what I'd do without all of you!

Sleepovers
Last Friday, we had the first (of I'm sure many) sleepover! Mason's friend Mary came over late afternoon to spend the night. Our first order of business was dinner, so Mary, Mason, Kate and I headed to Tony's Pizzeria for a yummy dinner of pizza and spaghetti. Tedd was on his way home from Charleston/Columbia so he only managed to join us at the very end. It was quite entertaining to sit there with 2 five-year-olds and a four-year-old. The conversation was interesting to say the least! Poor Kate (or Kake, as Mary's little brother, Nick, calls her) wanted nothing more than to play with Mason and Mary. Honestly, Mary & Kate have always played well together - their personalities are more similar! We wanted to give the M&M girls some time to play by themselves so Tedd took Kate for a long bath where she had fun playing in the bubbles. Once she was out & in her PJ's, M&M were very gracious and let her play with them. They spent an hour in the playroom dressing up, pretending to be things they
weren't and making a royal mess! In the picture, take note of their PJ's - they swapped out tops & bottoms so they were mis-matched with each others' PJs! We attempted putting the M&M girls to bed about 9:00, knowing that it would take a while for them to settle down and get to sleep. Each time we went in there they were in a different bed than the time before. We have 2 double beds in that room and Mary brought her sleeping bag. Sometimes they were both in one bed...other times they were spread out. It was definitely a case of Musical Beds!
The girls got up Saturday morning and Tedd fixed them Chocolate Chip pancakes, which I believe they inhaled. I was lucky enough to get to sleep in a little so I missed the whole breakfast thing! They girls played all morning and were having a great time when Mary's parents came to pick her up right before lunch. Mary was not at all happy about having to leave - there were tears and everything. That, of course, made us feel great, but I'm not sure it made her parents too happy! Although they were glad she had a great time on someone else's turf. We're ready for the next sleepover. Both M&M say they want to spend 2 nights at each other's houses next time! Only time will tell...

A Magical Snowman...
This is what Mason wanted for Christmas! We were sitting around the dinner table a few weeks before Christmas and I asked Mason what she wanted. Her reply was quick, "That's easy, Mom - I only want one thing." "What is that?" I replied. "A magical snowman that can talk and will grant all of my wishes!" Needless to say, Tedd and I had to hold back the laughter. We weren't sure where you can find one of these magical snowmen...surely not at Target! What in the world were we going to get her for Christmas!? Anytime we asked her what she wanted, that was her answer. Tedd had decided that we should put a bucket of water with "a corn cob pipe and a button nose and 2 eyes made out of coal" floating in the water. No matter how funny that was to the adults who heard that, we decided it wouldn't be worth the years of therapy that would cause!
So...what did we finally decide on? Mason got a bunch of Polly Pocket stuff - and stuff it is. It's a million tiny pieces of clothing and accessories for these tiny plastic dolls. I don't know why in the world I did that to myself, but I couldn't find the magical snowman so what was I to do!? She got lots of other stuff, too, that and a hot-pink pappason chair were the Santa gifts.
Kate, on the other hand, was much easier! All she wanted from Santa was a stethoscope! Anytime she talked about Christmas she mentioned that Santa was going to bring her a "stetascope!" That was easily found at Target! Santa also brough her a hot-pink pappason chair and a Barbie keyboard. The keyboard has a cartridge which plays 3 pop songs, one of which is "Oops, I Did it Again." It is a funny sight to come around the corner hearing Kate sing that song. I think she is soooo going to be a bubble gum pop princess! What are we going to do!?
All in all we had a great Christmas. Both of my brothers and my sister-in-law were here so we did a lot of hanging our at Nan & Pop-Pop's house. We went on our annual excursion to Hollywild, where we had a zebra stick it's head in the door and give Kate lots of kisses...which she loved! Uncle John-John took the girls out on a date one afternoon. They went to Chick-fil-A for lunch and then he braved the movie theater and took them to see Happy Feet. They all seemed to have a fun time!
As nice as the holidays are, I am very glad to be back in the normal routine of life, even though it's not the most normal or routine thing around! Here's to a great 2007!

Kick-off to Christmas
About a week and a half ago, we hope we started a new family tradition. We decided to forgo the tree lots on Haywood Road and head to a local Christmas Tree Farm to find the perfect tree. We ended up at May-Lan Farms in Pelzer, SC. It was a great morning - sunny blue skies with a tiny nip of cold in the air - warm enough to not need a coat, but cool enough to feel a tad bit like the holidays. When we arrived, we were greeted immediately by a very helpful lady who told us the drill and handed us a saw. We took off to the fields of trees before us. We ha
d a bit of a hard time decided whether we really liked a Leland Cypress tree for a Christmas tree or not. We decided that we should try it and see what we thought. After all, we could always go back to a frasier fur or whatever next year. Mason helped pick out a great tree - full and perfectly shaped. After working on pictures for our Christmas card with an uncooperative Kate, Mason and Tedd got to work cutting down our tree. Kate and I stood back and offered our support! We had to drag our tree out t
o the "thoroughfare" and someone brought it back up to the main area where they shook it, wrapped it and had it waiting for us.While this was taking place, we decided to wander over to their petting zoo and check it out. They have the biggest pig I think I have ever seen in my life! He weighs over 600 lbs! They also had a couple of turkeys, peafowl, goats, rabbits, etc. The girls had fun visiting their barnyard buddies. On our way back towards our Christmas tree, we stopped off to roast a few marshmallows on the fire. Then it was time to claim our tree, get it tied on the car and head home. We now have a beautifully decorated tree standing on our den - some of the ornaments are too close to each other, but we had help decorating!
That evening we decided to take in the Poinsett Parade downtown. This is your definite hometown parade with local high schoool bands, lots of dance companys, your local government officials riding in cars and many other floats/groups. Honestly, I think if you sign up to be in this parade you are allowed in it. There was someone from Liberty Tax Service dressed up as the Statue of Liberty - probably not a bad marketing tool with tax season right around the corner! The float that had us all in stitches was the Sweet Tea Queens. They had a website so I had to go check it out. As we guessed, they are the Spartanburg local chapter of the Sweet Potato Queens, a concept which has been explained and made popular by a series of books by Jill Conner Brown of Jackson, MS, who came up with the idea in 1982. It was a bit much! Anyway, we had fun downtown with a couple of families, who each had 2 girls, so we had 6 parents and 6 girls hanging out! I've got a few pictures I'll add when I get them uploaded from my camera!
It was a great way to kick off December and get into the Christmas spirit!

He's Gone and Done It...
Who is "HE" and what is "IT," you might ask. "HE" would be my crazy husband and "IT" would be signing up for Ironman Kentucky. Yes...you heard me correctly. He plans to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles on August 26, 2007 in Louisville, KY. This is an inaugural Ironman event, whatever that will mean. We're very excited about the weekend and the whole experience. Tedd said he wanted to complete an Ironman by the time he was 40, which just happens to occur about 2 weeks after the race! He looked at Ironman Florida, which is the first weekend in November, but the summer timing suited him much better. Mainly because he's ready to go into his cave once Daylight Savings Time ends in October. He's one of those crazy people who loves the heat and humidity of a southern summer.

Louisville looks like a pretty cool place. Neither of us have ever been there so I've been doing a litte internet research on things to do...and I don't think we'll be bored! There is an incredible waterfront park, the Louisville Zoo, the "horsey stuff," Six Flags and plenty of other activities. We are planning to be there from Thursday to Tuesday, so it should be a fun vacation for most of us. I can't imagine a 140.6 mile day as a vacation, but I'm not the crazy one competing in this event! The invitation is open for anyone who would like to join us in Louisville for this monumental day in Tedd's life! Let us know if you'd like to come and we'll let you know where we're staying, etc.
Wish me luck for the next 9 months as I become an "Iron-widow" as the spouses are typically called. He'll be putting in lots of training hours especially once spring rolls around!

Reliving the Past

Tonight...Duran Duran...in concert...and I was there! My dear friend Ana and I reverted to our middle school ways and acted like 13-olds - screaming for John Taylor and Simon LeBon. I sang every song and woo-hoo'd all night long. My throat already hurts! It truly was an incredible concert and lived up to my expectations, which were extremely high considering I've wanted to see them in concert for what...24 years or something like that.
I was one of those crazy Duran Duran fans when I was in middle school. My ro
om was wallpapered with pictures of them, especially John - who was definitely my favorite. I wish I had held on to all of that stuff because I think it would be funny to go back and look at it now. I knew all kinds of crazy trivia about them. Did you know the name of John's cat back in the early 80's? I doubt it, but I did! Why in the world did I know that!? It was Chaz, by the way! Why do I still know that!?I have very fond memories of walking to the Fort Benning PX with a group of about 6 girls when the Arena album came out...not a CD, mind you, but a record. It was about a 2 mile walk each way, but we asked our parents and for some reason they let us go! We spent the whole way there and back singing Duran Duran songs and talking about those 5 guys like we knew them! Wow...those were the days!
Well...I guess this proves that I am a total dork, but I'll just have to live with that because Duran Duran ROCKS!!!

Sally's 1st Day at our House
10.29.2006
"Sally Can I Walk You Home?"
That is the title of one of the girl's new favorite songs - written & sung by Robbie Schaefer, who also happens to be a member of our favorite folk ensemble Eddie from Ohio. It's a great song, but it also helped us name the latest addition to our family - our new puppy, Sally.
When naming said pup, we realized how brainwashed a kindergartner could be. The first name that came to mind was Sally Foster...yes, as in the wrapping paper that elementary schools so forcefully sell. That just wasnt' working for me. However, that did lead me to start singing "Sally Can I Walk You Home?" I guess that was enough incentive to drop the Foster part and name our sweet pup, Sally.
How did we come to get a new puppy, one might ask - Well...
I'm standing in my den one afternoon and the phone rings. It's my wonderful aunt (for whom I am named) and she is standing in Uncle Bob's office holding the leash of a puppy who apparently has a sister that needs a home. They did provide a home for one of these 2 puppies and decided it would be fun to share the experience of a new puppy with unsuspecting family members who had never had a puppy! I laughed it off and went on with my day.
Well, I talked to her later in the week and they had taken both of these puppies back to their house and were looking for a home for the female pup. I think she knew what a sucker I might be for this puppy, especially since she knew how badly the girls wanted a dog. Tedd was on a long bike ride, so the girls and I went over the "meet" these 2 dogs. Well, one thing led to another and the as-of-yet unnamed female pup was in my car heading to our house. Not quite sure what came over me at that point - it's that sucker for a puppy part! We were just bringing her home so Tedd could meet her - yeah right! Well he liked her and buckled under the pressure. We had to take her back to Annie's house for the night because we were less than prepared for a new dog, but we went to pick her up after church the next day and she's been with us ever since!
She is a black mixed breed, with some beagle, lab and hound in her. She really is quite a precious puppy, but is definitely more work than I imagined. They are guessing she's between 4 and 5 months old. We're working hard on getting her house-trained and for the most part, she's doing fine - we have our days, though. We're also trying to work obedience school into our already too busy schedules, but it has to be done!
Mason and Sally have bonded and are examples of why kids should have a dog! They play together great and Mason wants to be Sally's boss (since we won't let her be the boss of Kate!). She has done a great job of helping feed and walk Sally. Kate loves Sally TOO much. She hasn't quite figured out how to be gentle with her all of the time. She has her moments where she does exactly what she is supposed to, but there is a lot more times where she is pulling on any one of Sally's body parts or pinching her. We're working really hard with Kate so that Sally won't be terrified of her!
I'll post some pictures of Sally when I get them downloaded from the camera. I'm just too tired to do that tonight!

"I ride a horsey at my birthday party"

Those words were heard many times each day for weeks! Kate was so excited about her birthday party...and we can't believe we talked about before the actual day. It seemed like an eternity until the party actually happened! She had a GREAT time at her party, which was held at Eden Farms. She had lots of her friends there to help her celebrate turning 4 (where does the time go!?). Thankfully, we had 2 horses for everyone to ride because we couldn't get Kate off of the horse. She took her turn and
when it was time to let a friend ride, she was not happy AT ALL! We let a few friend ride and then we put her back on. From that point on, we had everyone take turns on one horse and Kate rode many, many circles around the ring. They have this great playground right next to the ring, so no one seemed to mind waiting for their turn on the horse - a great idea on Eden Farms' part, I do believe!
After one hour of horseback riding, it was time to sing Happy Birthday and eat cake (delicious cream cheese cake from Gretchen's ABS cakes in Mauldin - that might be my favorite cake!). All of Kate's friends sang, ate and then played some more on the playground. After awhile, people started to head back home so we said many goodbyes! Of course, we saw many of the friends the next day at Camille's birthday party. There were 4 birthdays in Kate's class between September 10 and September 17 - it was a week of parties for these kids! After everyone left, we packed everything up and decided to g
o to Bertolo's (Kate's favorite pizza place) for dinner. It was too late to think about cooking anything and I was too tired! We invited Cara to come with us, since she's basically part of our family! We had yummy pizza for dinner and then headed home to open presents - lots of horsey things, which Kate loved! All in all, it was a great day/party. However, I was very relieved to have 3 birthdays behind me. Now all I have to do is wait for mine...and I'm not planning a party!
"Middle School Men" in the Boundary Waters...

...with no female/adult supervision! That sounds like trouble to me! Tedd and 3 guys spent a week canoeing in the Boundary Waters - the boundary of Minnesota & Canada, that is. His 3 canoeing buddies - all retired guys - drove the many, many hours from here to Ely, Minnesota. Since poor Tedd has to support his charming family of girls and has limited vacation days, he had to fly in. They had a great time acting like middle school boys...doing all those things they aren't allowed to do when their wives are around!

They went through an outfitter that has been planning these trips for years and it all seemed to go on without a hitch. They spent the night at the outfitters "bunk house" before putting in on Saturday (Sept. 9, which also happened to be Tedd's birthday - Happy Birthday, Tedd!). They had everything they needed for 5 nights between the 2 canoes. Tedd borrowed a fishing rod from a friend and actually had a great time fishing! There's even proof that he caught some decent sized fish! The pictures are fantastic - we live in a beautiful country! He says he can't wait to take me and the girls back there one day - maybe when they're about 9 & 10. I'd love it! It was definitely a trip I wanted to go on...just not with 4 guys! I'm not sure I could have handled that!
We are really glad he had such a great trip, but we were definitely very happy to see him when he got home a week later. He (and I) hope that we are doing such great things 20 years from now, like his canoeing buddies. If I can get some more details from Tedd, I'll add them to the blog, but this will have to suffice for now!

To Dallas...
Tonight was quite an occasion for a very special person to me. My dear friend, Jason, was ordained into the ministry tonight by FBC. I was honored to serve on the ordaining council. I have known Jason for almost 10 years. I have seen him grow up from a young high school student, move onto Clemson and finally become a divinity school graduate who has accepted a call to become an associate pastor at a church in Dallas. As happy as I am for him (and his wonderful fiance, Carrie), part of me is sad that he will be moving so far away. Sounds like I'm going to have to plan a trip to Dallas! 2006 will be a huge year for him as he has graduated from Divinity School, gotten a job, become ordained into the ministry and will be getting married in October. The church is Dallas is VERY lucky to have Jason and Carrie coming to be a part of their church family - I hope they realize just how lucky they are! They will be truly blessed.

Hiking, Campfire & S'Mores

Mason's 5th birthday party was a HUGE success...and it was all HER idea! She told us earlier this summer that she wanted to go on a hike and have a camping birthday party. Sounded great to us! We reserved a campsite at Paris Mountain State Park and started planning our party. We were lucky enough to have Ranger Kathy lead a way-cool creek hike to start the party. We had 8 girls plus a few parents join in on the hike. They were each given nets and discovered all kinds of creatures that make their homes in the creek. Everyone loved it!

They made their way back to the campsite where we were going to cook hotdogs over the campfire. We forgot the "fire" so we had to borrow a torch from some neighboring campers to get the fire started. Mason called her "guy" Bootie and asked him to come to her birthday party with his guitar. There was no way he could say no once he listened to her message! So...while the campfire getting hot enough to cook on, Bootie led the group in some fun camp songs starting with a great rendition of "Happy Birthday" for the birthday girl!
Once the fire was ready, we armed the campers with clothes hangers for their cooking sticks. It didn't take long and the whole group was eating hotdogs and potato chips. Even a few of the adults decided to roast a hot dog or two! Once everyone had finished their supper we moved right into CAKE! It was almost time for people to go home, but we had to roast marshmallows and make S'Mores. What's a camping "trip" without S'Mores!? Some of our campers only wanted marshmallows, others only wanted chocolate and some only wanted graham crackers - there were all kinds of S'Mores that evening! We had a great time and were sorry to see the party come to a close.
Our family was planning on staying and camping, but I forgot our clothes! Since it was 7:30, we decided to call it a night and plan a camping trip sometime this fall! I think I was so focused on the party part, the camping part got forgotten! The birthday girl didn't ask about spending the night there, so we figured we were safe to go home! Personally, it worked out great for me because I got to sleep late the next morning thanks to my wonderful in-laws! I know I would have been up at 6:00 if we'd camped. Ahhh....sleeping in - what a rarity anymore!
